Lawn Mower Troubleshoot: Losing power during mowing

It’s happened to all of us at some point: You’re half way through mowing the lawn when your petrol mower loses power and stalls.

Here are 4 common causes for this, and what you can do about it:

  • Dirty Air Filter:
Check your air filter, if it looks dirty try cleaning or replacing it.
  • Dirty Spark Plug:
Check your spark plug, if it looks dirty try cleaning or replacing it.
  • Cutting Long Grass:
If you’re cutting really long grass, raise the cutting height on your lawn mower as much as possible to avoid choking the mower. You can always go back and do another pass on a lower setting to get a shorter cut.
  • Build Up of Clippings & Debris:
Check the underside of the mower deck to make sure there isn’t a build up of clippings / debris. If it looks like there is a build up move your mower off your lawn to a hard surface. With the mower turned off, clear the underside of the mower of excessive clippings, then try mowing again.
